The future of newspaper- journalism, an interesting discussion

Posted July 29th, 2010 in Video by Bas van den Beld

It’s been quite a while since I’ve updated this blog. There’s a reason for that (next to my two week holiday in Spain) but I’ll inform you on that soon, when there is more news to actually give out :)

In the meanwhile, I’m spending more and more time looking at videos online. Why? Because there is so much great content out there! Have you for example ever looked at Youtube.com/edu? Lots of content from which you can learn very much there!

When I was in high school I actually wanted to become a journalist. Because there were not enough places in the School for Journalism I ended up studying history and ending up in a totally different place (though I feel like sometimes I did get into Journalism). As we all know Journalism is having a hard time these days. Especially those working with newspapers. Where is that going? On YouTube I found this talk between Jay Rosen and Clay Shirky on what’s happening in journalism. They talk at the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. Its a very interesting series to watch over the weekend!

A short plug for the International Search Summit

Posted June 28th, 2010 in Interview, speaking, Video by Bas van den Beld

I was fortunate to be invited twice to speak at the International Search Summit in London. This conference, organized by Webcertain, the company of Andy Atkins Kruger, is a small conference, but one which is very nice, partly because its not that big. You really get good information from different international speakers and you can really learn something there. At the last one in London I (with some others) was shortly asked about the conference. An opinion I was happy to give, you can find it below in the video. This is one conference I will come back if they ask me. And then off course I hope to see you there ;) .

As an Ajax- or Leeds fan you just have to love YouTube

Posted February 25th, 2010 in Video by Bas van den Beld

Last week at Search Engine Strategies late at night in the pub Dave Naylor suddenly looked at his phone and looked sad. When I asked him what the matter was he told me his favorite football club Leeds United had just lost to Wallsall. In the First English Division. Leeds once was one of the leading clubs in English Football, being champions ‘only’ back in 1992, when Eric Cantona played in Leeds.

Dave and I talked a little about the football as I am a big Ajax-fan. Now Ajax has always been one of the leading clubs in Europe, but the last decade it has declined rapidly with the last championship in 2004. “Where are the days you could watch a game, sit back and know they will win” I said to Dave. Those days are gone. Tonight Ajax plays Juventus in the Europa League. With a 1-2 loss last week at home chances are they will be out of the cup by the end of the evening.

But as an Ajax- or Leeds fan luckily there is YouTube. The video-channel from Google. Although some Italian judges might ‘kill’ the website if they get there way with the conviction of some Google-bosses in Italy over a video, the site (for now) is a huge resource of historical material. And you can be back in those successful 90s within seconds. Continue Reading »

A naked Gary Lineker?

Posted January 7th, 2010 in Video by Bas van den Beld

As a boy I grew up watching football a lot. And though I’m not a UK resident I did see a lot of Gary Lineker, England striker, Barcelona player. He was "the role model" for every player, never got a yellow card, always nice, yet succesfull. Yet I never dreamed (or wanted for that matter) about seeing him in his ‘birthday suite’. The former England captain, now BBC Match Of The Day anchorman, showed up in this commercial.

So why post it here? Well, for one thing because it surprised me, second I believe this is one of those commercials which could go viral. I talked about linkbait the other day in a training session I did on search marketing. Here’s an example of some brilliant linkbait by Walkers Crips;)
