Readers tip: what is… a usabilitytest

Category:explained Tags :

Usability verloopIf you read a lot on the web you often ‘bump’ into good articles and posts. One of them I found at the weblog off Renata Verloop. She writes (in Dutch) about usabilitytests, what are they and what do you have to look at in such a test.

The importance of a usabilitytest is large. Not only do you help your visitors find quickly what they are looking for and therefore make them feel well about your website, it also helps with search. How? Well it’s pretty simple actually: if your website follows the usability-rules and the visitor will find what they want fast and easy, they will easier make a link to your site as a source. Just as I’m doing to Renata’s website right now. And those links help in increasing your websites ranking in search engines.

Renata’s article covers a number of different items:

– What is a usabilitytest?
– For what do you use a usabilitytest?
– What do you need to do yourself?
– Who can do a usabilitytest and what are the costs?
– What are the do’s and don’ts?

The last part I want to give away here, just because they are good ‘tips’. For the others parts, read the article yourself :).

The do’s en don’ts according to Renata:

Don’ts

  • Start testing the website when its completely finished
  • Having usabilitytests done by the designer or webbuilder (they are checking their own work)
  • Doing the tests on your websites at your aunties
  • Saying the testers are doing it wrong

Do’s

  • Reserve a budget for usabilitytests
  • Test a prototype
  • Formulate what you want to learn from a test
  • Have projectmembers attent tests
  • Have the tests done by a specialized usability agency
  • Test again after big changes

Stem op mij op de Marcom top 100 The summer holiday for me is often just as new years eve. You make good intentions about what you want to do after the holiday. Work harder, work less hard or do more household chores are examples of those intentions.

For my blog I’ve also made a number of plans. Not only will I keep on improving this weblog (more on this later), I thought it was high time for those long-awaited notification in the Marcom 100. And that is what happened. It almost fell through because off the English part on the site (The Marcom is Dutch only), but from this moment on I am ‘electable’ with this blog for the Marcom. What that means? That you can vote on my blog if you are a member and that I probably will get more name recognition and related press releases from now on. Furthermore, not much more;). This does not mean that I don’t like to score high in the Marcom. Right now I entered as number 149 in the runners up section.

So do what you have to do: put www.basvandenbeld.nl in your favorites on your Marcom page! Are you not a member? No problem, just sign. For tips on other sites I can do the list: Besides off course basvandenbeld.nl: Dutchcowboys.nl Mobilecowboys.nl Searchcowboys.nl Dutchcowgirls.nl Or any other (Dutch) blog from my blogroll at the bottom of this website;)

Haal me uit de runners up in de top 100!

I updated my blogroll: who did I miss?

Category:Weblog,Websites Tags :

Blogroll websites & weblogsMost weblogs have a ‘blogroll’. This is a list of websites and weblogs ‘recommended’ by the author of the weblog. Having a link on that list can sometimes be very interesting for search engine marketing purposes. If you feel the need of putting this weblog in your blogroll I therefore wouldn’t mind : ).

The main reason for putting a link there however, should be the convenience of the reader. It offers the reader ‘more information’ on issues where he or she may be interested in.

Today I have updated my list of websites and weblogs. The list can be seen in the most right column. These sites are what I recommend to read. But perhaps this list isn’t complete. Therefore, I also wonder if you have additions. Which site or weblog should not be missing?

Note: This is not about unscrupulous advertising of your own websites, but an objective demand. So please give constructive comments : ).
