The importance of mobile and the user perspective

Tags :

Last week I spent a few days in Munich for the SMX Munich conference. It was a great couple of days for many reasons. I met up with some old friends I hadn’t seen in a while. I was able to connect with some new people and had a great time with some I speak more often. And yes, I spoke :).

In Munich, I shared a stage with Cindy Krum, who is the major authority on Mobile SEO. We talked about Mobile-Friendly User Experience. The session was a great one. I kicked it off talking about how to look at mobile and how people behave on mobile. In the presentation, I made sure to add some German statistics since after all we were in Germany. The slides can be found here:

I wrote an extensive post about my part on State of Digital here.

The importance of mobile

It’s evident that these days mobile is important. 8 out of 10 people now own a smartphone. And if you look at emerging markets, it’s mobile first all the time. So mobile is important.

However, I personally believe many look to mobile in a wrong way. They focus on the device first, the phone that is. Whereas looking at mobile is actually a lot more (as I describe in the talk and article).

Mobile is where people are. Knowing where people are is more important than the device they are on. If you understand they are on the move, you can create content that fits their needs. That’s even more important than the device (which can change).

This presentation fits into what I have been saying a lot in the past years. It’s part of understanding your customers. That also means it’s part of how you figure out what your audience wants and what content should be created to fit that.

An Example of My SlideDecks

Tags :

I do a lot of talks around the world about Online Marketing related topics. The focus lies very much on consumer behaviour these days. A few years ago I uploaded all my presentations to Slideshare. I don’t do that anymore, because my talks are very much story telling and I am using a lot of images it doesn’t make sense to upload each presentation.

However people who haven’t seen me speak are still interested in what they can expect, so I created a slide deck with some examples of what I talk about and added some explanation to it.

This deck however gives you some insights into how I build up my decks and stories and what you can expect.

Off course the best way of getting an idea is still to actually see one of my presentations. 🙂 But this is a start ;-).

My presentation on SES London 2011 (#sesuk)

Tags :

Yesterday I spoke on the “Marketing to the European Union” panel at SES London. I was joined by Mikkel deMib, Ciaran Norris and Kristjan Hauksson and we were moderated by Andy Atkins Kruger. It was a good session in which many different cultural aspects of Europe were brought to the attention. It wasn’t a very ‘technical’ session, but sort of an ‘introduction’ to Europe. Here’s my part of the session:

Did you attend the session? I’d love to hear your feedback for improvement!

The future of search, in Dutch, my presentation at Emerce Travel 2010

Tags :

Today at the Emerce Travel Event 2010 I spoke about the future of search (in Dutch). I talked about Universal Search, how search engines are trying to grab the user intent and how you should handle that. It went really well and I was surprised about how many people showed up. It was standing room only and people were actually standing outside of the room listening to what I had to say, that was kinda cool ;).

Here’s my presentation on Slideshare:
